Tacony has a new supermarket.
Super Foodtown of Tacony opened Friday, October 16, at 6327 Torresdale Avenue, in the building that used to hold a Rite Aid pharmacy. At about 11,000 square feet, it is a full-service grocery store, not a corner market: fresh produce, full-service meat and seafood counters, organic and natural products, and a large international foods aisle built around the neighborhood’s diversity.
Independent grocer Mike Said owns and operates the store, backed by Allegiance Retail Services, the cooperative that supports Foodtown’s independent operators. It also offers Foodtown’s Club Card and Loyalty Rewards programs and carries the Best Yet private label brand.
“We’re proud of Foodtown’s continued expansion in the Philadelphia market and helping to bring greater access to fresh, quality, and affordable food to the local neighborhoods,” said Samer Rahman, Allegiance’s president and chief operating officer. “Our independent grocers are deeply committed to the communities they serve, and this opening is another great example of that commitment in action.”
Foodtown is not new to Philadelphia. The banner already operates stores in Kensington at 3528 I Street and in Oxford Circle at 6515 Castor Avenue. The Tacony opening is its third new store since summer, after two in Brooklyn.
For Tacony, the practical news is simple: a vacant pharmacy on Torresdale Avenue is a grocery store again, with produce, meat, and seafood counters a short trip from home.
